[THE BOY WHO CRIED WOLF]
The Boy Who Cried Wolf
There once was a shepherd boy who was watching the village sheep. To get some fun he cried, "Wolf! Wolf! The Wolf is chasing the sheep!"
The villagers came running to help the boy drive the wolf away. And the boy laughed when he saw their angry faces.
"Don't cry 'wolf', shepherd boy," said the villagers, "when there's no wolf!"
Later, the boy cried again, "Wolf! Wolf! The wolf is chasing the sheep!" The villagers came running again to help him drive the wolf away.
Later, he saw a real wolf near the sheep. He cried out as loudly as he could, "Wolf! Wolf!"
But the villagers thought he was trying to fool them again, and so they didn't come.
At sunset, when the shepherd boy didn't return to the village with their sheep, the villagers went looking for him. The boy said: - I cried out, "Wolf!" Why didn't you come?"
"Nobody believes a liar...even when he is telling the truth!" - replied an old man.
В последнее время идиома to cry wolf - поднимать ложную тревогу обретает особую частотность в связи с призывами в американской прессе прекратить нагнетать страхи по поводу так называемой российской угрозы.
